Thursday, October 25, 2012 Large early vote turnout in Cuyahoga County Over 1,000 people voting every day Story by BILL RICE This story is part of a special series.

| Large numbers of people are voting early in Ohio, and more than 15 percent of the votes cast so far have been in Cuyahoga County. Bill Rice of Ohio Public Radio Station WCPN reports. |
At the Cuyahoga County Board of elections Wednesday, voters lined up to take their place in one of 48 polling booths and cast their vote. It was a typical day, says Board Director Jane Platten.
“A constant stream of voters every day since Oct. 2. We’re now seeing 1,000 or more voters coming in on a daily basis.”
Platten says some 19,000 people in the county have voted early in person. That’s 2000 more than had voted in person by this time back in 2008. That’s not a huge difference, Platen says.
“But if you think about the fact that we have not been open weekends this year, and we were open weekends back in 2008, we do have a higher concentration of people coming down in a less amount of days.”
As of Tuesday night the total of in person and mail-in ballots cast in the county was about 133 thousand. Another 140 thousand had requested mail-in ballots but hadn’t yet returned them. |
