  • Biden lands in Canton to drum up support
  • Women give the president much of his Ohio lead
  • Third-grade reading guarantee first signs of trouble
  • What's Ohio's shale really worth? No one is saying
  • Gas prices are nearer to $3 than $4 in Ohio

  • Biden hits Northeast Ohio
Vice President Joe Biden is in Canton today at a southwest side community center, then heading to Lorain. And President Obama is hitting the Buckeye State later this week, where he’ll wrap up a two-day blitz of swing states in Cleveland  on Thursday.

Women give the president much of his Ohio lead
The newest poll of likely Ohio voters shows President Obama with a 5 point edge over challenger Mitt Romney.

The Quinnipiac survey is the first major poll done since Gov. Romney and President Obama held their second presidential debate last week, and comes out as the two are preparing for their final debate tonight.

It shows the president’s lead has been cut in half since a poll taken before the presidential debates began, but that he’s still far stronger among women and early voters.

Pollster Peter Brown says Ohio’s stronger economy – unemployment dropped to 7 percent last month – is hurting  Romney’s chances in the Buckeye State.

The same poll shows Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown with a significant lead over his GOP challenger, state Treasurer Josh Mandel, 51 percent to 42 percent.

Mandel’s campaign claims internal polling shows the race is virtually tied. The last of three Senatorial debates is this Thursday.

Third-grade reading guarantee first signs of trouble
School districts around the state are assessing their students’ kindergarten through third-grade reading skills, and for some, the early results indicate trouble.

Ohio is transitioning to a third-grade reading guarantee that could flunk students next school year who are not reading at the third-grade level — as measured by standardized tests. As part of that, state law is requiring schools to notify families now if their children are falling behind.

According to the Columbus Dispatch, as much as 40 percent of some school districts have sent such notices to parents.

The law exempts children who are in special-education classes or have limited English-speaking skills. But as many as 10,000 children could be affected by the guarantee.  When it comes to them, local schools will have three choices: promote children if their teacher and principal and another reading evaluation agree; promote children with intensive help or hold the children back.

What's Ohio's shale really worth? No one is saying
A new investigative report by Reuters says the value of the oil and gas in the shale under much of Ohio remains an unknown, and state law helps keep it that way.

One of the biggest players in the exploration, Chesapeake Energy, claims the Utica shale is worth $500 billion.  But Reuters says Ohio is “one of the nation’s least transparent states when it comes to energy data – a distinction the industry worked to maintain this year.”

The news service says state lawmakers removed a clause from a new state law that would have allowed state regulators to disclose energy production data quarterly.  After meeting with industry representatives, lawmakers instead barred state officials from revealing the quarterly numbers.

Reuters says results from the early wells drilled so far have been mixed, though Marathon Petroleum has upgraded its Canton refinery to prepare for the crude oil coming from the shale.

Gas prices are nearer to $3 than $4 in Ohio
Meanwhile, gas prices have been plummeting in Northeast Ohio for the past week. In Stark County this morning, some were down below $3.20. And throughout the state, AAA said they dropped last week to a state average of $3.37, 25 cents below the previous week. But oil prices are rising worldwide because of violence in Lebanaon.

    PD: Rock curator is gone
The Plain Dealer is reporting that Rock and Roll Hall of Fame curator Jim Henke has the museum.

Henke was vice president of exhibitions and curatorial affairs and had been with the rock hall since 1994. He’s a native of the Cleveland area, and had worked at the Plain Dealer,  Elektra Entertainment and Rolling Stone.

The Plain Dealer says the museum is not commenting other than saying “his role has been transitions to that of a consultant.”
