Brown and Mandel debate tonight
Massillon judge suspended for 6 months
Clemency denied for Akron inmate
|
Brown, Mandel to debate tonight Democratic U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown and Republican challenger Josh Mandel are ready to hold the second of three debates tonight in Columbus.
The two exchanged insults in their first meeting at the City Club earlier this week. Mandel said he wouldn't have supported the auto bailout, but Brown reiterated his support of the plan.
It's one of the costliest and closely watched Senate races in the country, and we'll carry the debate live tonight at 8 on channel HD-4, and streaming online at WKSU.org.
Massillon judge suspended for 6 months The Ohio Supreme Court has unanimously suspended the license of Massillon Municipal Court Judge Edward J. Elum for six months. But the suspension is being stayed on condition of good conduct during that period.
The decision stems from two violations of the rules for judicial conduct.
In one case, Elum improperly interceded in a parole violation case by holding an off-the-record meeting with the defendant, without attorneys present.
In the other, the court found that Elum improperly involved himself in a police investigation of an officer who sent lewd photos to a woman arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. During the court proceedings, Elum ordered the Massillon Police Department, with whom he has an admitted history of conflicts, to turn over the evidence from the investigation.
Clemency denied for Akron inmate The Ohio Parole Board has declined to recommend mercy for a condemned inmate sentenced to die next month for stabbing an Akron woman more than 100 times, then cutting off her hands.
The 9-0 decision by the parole board Thursday is the third time clemency has been rejected for Brett Hartman, who has had two previous execution dates postponed.
The board, as it has twice before, cited the brutality of the Sept. 9, 1997, slaying of 46-year-old Winda Snipes and the "overwhelming evidence" of Hartman's guilt.
The 38-year-old Hartman came within about a week of execution in 2009 before federal courts allowed him to pursue an innocence claim.
Another execution date last year was postponed because of a federal lawsuit over Ohio's execution policy. |
