  • Cuyahoga may cut the time it jails people
A hearing is set early next month in a federal lawsuit that challenges how long Cuyahoga County keeps suspects in jail before judges set bail.

The suit filed in U.S. District Court in August says Cuyahoga  uses Common Pleas judges to set bail, while other counties use municipal court judges. Municipal judges often set bond within 24 hours.

The suit was filed on behalf of Andrew Dombroff, who was jailed for five days on drug charges before a judge released him on his own recognizance.

The Plain Dealer quotes acting county Prosecutor Tim McGinty saying the county could resolve the situation with reforms recommended eight years ago by a consultant, which recommended a central booking process and first court appearance within 48 hours.  McGinty has taken over from long-time county prosecutor Bill Mason, who retired this fall.

Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan in is Northeast Ohio for his seventh Ohio campaign stop in the last 10 days. He’s to be accompanied by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a speech at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea.

The Browns training camp adjacent to the campus was also the setting for a press conference this morning at which new owner Jimmy Haslam introduced the new Browns CEO: former Philadelphia Eagles President Joe Banner. Banner said his goal is a Super Bowl win, and Haslam says he and Banner have spent the last two to three months “making sure he was the right fit.”

Condoleezza Rice, by the way, is a long-time Browns fan.

Senate candidates prep for debate II
The two major party candidates in the most expensive Senate race in the county are preparing for their second debate tomorrow night. Incumbent Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown and state Treasurer Josh Mandel are to meet at 8 p.m. in Columbus.

At their first debate on Monday, Mandel said firmly for the first time that he would have voted against the auto rescue. Brown responded that other Republicans – including George Voinovich –joined him in voting for a bailout that he says saved hundreds of thousands of jobs.
