Education Sunday, September 30, 2012 NEOMED going totally smoke free Campus-wide tobacco ban starts Nov. 1 by WKSU's KABIR BHATIA |
 Reporter Kabir Bhatia | | |
In The Region: Another northeast Ohio college is banning tobacco, both inside AND outside its buildings. WKSU’s Kabir Bhatia reports on the campus-wide smoking ban headed to Northeast Ohio Medical University. |
The NEOMED smoking ban goes into effect on all parts of the campus in southern Portage County Nov. 1.
The decision follows a recommendation from the Ohio Board of Regents to ban tobacco at all state colleges and universities, and passage of a tobacco-free proposal from the school's student council.
Voters already have passed a ban on smoking inside all public buildings in Ohio, including college classrooms and dorms. And Miami of Ohio and Toledo already have extended that ban to most outdoor areas.
Cleveland State University plans to vote on a total tobacco ban next month. But the urban campus may have more difficulty with such a ban. The school’s campus is scattered around downtown Cleveland, and officials tell the Plain Dealer that they’re sensitive to concerns that students will congregate outside downtown businesses to smoke. |
