Crime and Courts Thursday, September 20, 2012 Second Ohio execution this year 47-year-old Donald Palmer killed Charles Sponhaltz and Steven Vargo in 1989 by WKSU's STATEHOUSE BUREAU CHIEF KAREN KASLER |
 Reporter Karen Kasler | | |
In The Region: Ohio’s second execution of 2012 was routine, but also emotional – as the condemned inmate used his final words to apologize. 47-year-old Donald Palmer was put to death by lethal injection 23 years after he shot and killed Charles Sponhaltz and Steven Vargo, two men he didn’t know, along a road in Belmont County in eastern Ohio. Alan Johnson of the Columbus Dispatch was among the media witnesses, and said Palmer’s last words were directed at the family members of his victims. |
| Palmer didn't know the men, who were both married fathers. A few of the women said afterward that they believed that the apology was sincere, but that it was too little, too late. Authorities say Palmer had been in the area to confront and possibly rob a man who had dated his ex-wife. |
