Environment Friday, September 14, 2012 EPA awards grant to aid Northeast Ohio waterways Environmental group says money can help provide "green" infrastructure by WKSU's GRANT ENGLE | Reporter Grant Engle | | |
In The Region: A Northeast Ohio environmental group was awarded a $770,000 grant from the U.S. EPA Thursday to improve the watershed that flows into Lake Erie.
Chagrin River Watershed Partners plans to rebuild the parking lot of the Great Lakes Mall in Mentor and allow storm water to drain through the concrete into the sandy soil below.
Amy Brennan is the director of the watershed partners. She said the project will benefit all Northeast Ohioans. |
“This is going to improve water quality to Newell/Ward Creek, the Chagrin River and ultimately, Lake Erie. That’s where we all get our drinking water from – that is really a lot of the economic development driver of our communities. Keeping our great Lake great is really important.”
Other parts of the project include stream restoration along the Newell/Ward Creek from Eastlake to Mentor and outreach programs to the 5,000 residents near the watershed.
The group plans to start those two parts of the project as early as October or November. |
