  • Elections chief reconvenes panel
Ohio's elections chief has reconvened the panel that approves ballot language after the Ohio Supreme Court scolded the board for poorly wording a fall ballot issue on redistricting.

Secretary of State Jon Husted called an emergency meeting of the state Ballot Board for Thursday to rewrite Issue 2.

The turn of events follows a lawsuit filed by the group backing the issue, Voters First, arguing the board's original wording left out key elements of its elaborate proposal. The high court ruled Wednesday that board-approved language was inaccurate and incomplete.

The group proposes a constitutional amendment creating a new system for drawing Ohio's legislative and congressional maps. It would strip state and federal elected officials of their role in the process and give the job to a 12-person commission.

    Amish hair-cutting trial in deliberations
Jurors are now deciding the fate of 16 people accused of hate crimes in hair- and beard-cutting attacks against fellow Amish in Ohio.

The members of a breakaway Amish settlement are accused of hate crimes in what federal prosecutors say were attacks motivated by religious differences. They say the defendants cut off Amish men's beards and women's hair because the hair carries spiritual significance in their faith.

Defense attorneys acknowledge that the hair-cuttings took place and that crimes were committed but contend that prosecutors are overreaching by calling them hate crimes. They told jurors to use common sense in deciding the verdict.

All the defendants could face lengthy prison terms if convicted.

    FirstMerit buying Michigan bank
Akron-based FirstMerit Bank announced today it's buying Citizens Bank of Michigan in a deal valued at $912 million.

The combined company will have $24 billion in assets and employ more than 5-thousand people in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

As part of the deal, FirstMerit will repay the government about $345 million in TARP stock held by Citizen’s.  The entire deal is expected to close next year.
