North Olmsted mayor's court will be more convenient
Mayor touts lower court fees and evening hours; opponents say it destorys regional consolidation
by WKSU's KABIR BHATIA

In The Region:
North Olmsted plans to start its own mayor's court next year, pulling out of Rocky River’s Municipal Court and taking a quarter of the budget – and a third of the case load -- with it. WKSU’s Kabir Bhatia has more on Ohio’s first new mayor’s court in 30 years.

Currently, Rocky River hears North Olmsted’s traffic, misdemeanor and first-time drunk-driving cases. The fines go to North Olmsted; the court costs go to Rocky River. North Olmsted Mayor Kevin Kennedy wants to lower the court costs and keep them in-house.

“Obviously if you get a ticket in North Olmsted, it will be more convenient for you to come to North Olmsted. And also our court won’t be during the day; you won’t have to talk a half-day off of work. You’ll be able to come at night.”

Kennedy says court revenues will cover one full-time and two part-time jobs for the court.North Olmsted Councilman Mark Mahoney was one of two votes against the new court. He says it’s purely to generate revenue and flies in the face of regional consolidation that would benefit Northeast Ohio. As for the question of convenience:

“That’s ridiculous. We’re not in the business of coddling violators, speeders and drunk drivers.”

Mahoney also praised the efficiency of Rocky River’s court and probation department. But Mayor Kennedy says Rocky River has increased its budget by $600,000 since 2000, while hearing 10,000 fewer cases.
