Early weekend voting appeal has Ohio boards of elections at a standstill
Secretary of State Jon Husted refuses to comply with the reinstatement of early weekend voting until the appeal is resolved

Ohio’s 88 county boards of elections have no idea if they will be open for in-person voting on the weekend before the Nov. 6th election, and many say they can’t even started to prepare.

Last week, federal Judge Peter Economus struck down a state law barring in-person voting on that weekend.   But Ohio is appealing. And Secretary of State Jon Husted will not allow the boards to begin setting up for weekend voting until the appeal is resolved.

Kim Zurz, the deputy director for the Summit County Board of Elections, says the county boards have limited options.

“There really isn’t anything we can deal with. We just are in a holding pattern until we hear one way or the other. If we find out that the judge’s ruling will be upheld, then we’ll move forward, obviously planning in that direction. If we find out that the appeal is successful then we’ll move forward in that--you know, it’s just entirely gonna be up to the courts.”

Economus has ordered Husted to appear in his court next Thursday. Early voting starts on Oct. 2.
