Economy and Business Thursday, September 6, 2012 Acacia board will decide tonight if greenspace or commercial is its future Country club is voting on Conservation Fund offer, with a competing deal from the city on the table by WKSU's KEVIN NIEDERMIER |
 Reporter Kevin Niedermier | | |
In The Region: The board of the Acacia County Club in Lyndhurst will vote tonight on an offer by a nonprofit group to buy the club and keep it as a green-space. The Conservation Fund has offered nearly $15 million, and promises to maintain the 160-acre site in the eastern Cleveland suburb of Lyndhurst as a park.
But Lyndhurst itself is making a competing bid for the property. It’s putting together a $16 million package with developers, which it says will bolster the city’s shrinking tax base.
Cleveland State University urban planner Robert Simons, compares the two choices. |
“It’s a fascinating issue of public benefit versus private gain. What is the public interest in a situation like this? What right does Lyndhurst have to make itself sustainable? Ironically, fiscal sustainability and environmental sustainability may not be pulling in the same direction on this deal.”
Simons says he thinks a mixed-use plan would be the best use of the property.
Acacia’s board has already rejected a $12 million bid and a $16 millionr bid from developers. It’s for sale because, like many private clubs, it cannot keep up with rising costs and declining memberships.
