London architect Zaha Hadid designed the aquatic center for the 2012 Olympics, and now she’s among three dozen firms submitting plans for Kent’s $45 million architecture building. It’s intended to be the centerpiece of Kent’s esplanade, which connects the school to downtown.
College of Architecture Dean Doug Steidl says Kent’s architecture program is currently spread out among three buildings.
“Peer-to-peer learning is so critical in the creative arts. And those students are doing projects, they’re working at 11:30 at night, the faculty isn’t there, they need to bounce that information, or their ideas, off somebody.”
Steidl says the project will be financed with university bonds, but matching money from alumni and local building companies is also being sought.
The new architecture building is part of the $170 million dollar expansion that includes new art and science buildings, plus almost an acre of solar panels to power Dix Stadium. The University says the expansion should be complete by 2015.
Listener Comments:
What coating protection system will you use for the steel on the expansion and solar panel installation. Something good for the enviroment, economical, with no maintenance, I hope?
