Environment Tuesday, August 28, 2012 Officials find Asian Carp DNA in Lake Erie for the second time Ohio natural resources officials say there are traces of the fish in Lake Erie, but none of the actual fish have been found by WKSU's STATEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT BILL COHEN |
 Reporter Bill Cohen | | |
| Are there Asian Carp in Lake Erie or not? That’s the question that Ohio natural resources officials are puzzling over. That’s because for the second time in two years, they have found DNA from the voracious fish…..but no live fish themselves. Statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen reports. |
Scientists worry if the Asian Carp ever migrates from the Mississippi river into the Great Lakes, the fast growing fish will crowd out other species and destroy the sport fishing industry in Ohio and neighboring states. That’s why this paradox is so frustrating for Ohio natural resources officials. Once again they’ve confirmed the presence of Asian Carp DNA in 20 out of 100 water samples in the western part of Lake Erie. But once again, when they’ve collected live fish from the area, none of them has been Asian carp. All officials can say is they’ll keep testing and investigating, and they’ll keep prodding congress to erect more barriers to keep the Carp out of Lake Erie and all the other Great Lakes. |
