Kasich supports exotic animal "zoo"
Facility would serve as sanctuary for confiscated animals
by WKSU's STATEHOUSE BUREAU CHIEF KAREN KASLER

Reporter
Karen Kasler

The planned zoo-like facility for exotic animals that will be seized under a new law has the support of Gov. John Kasich.

The exotic animal crackdown taking effect next month allows the state to confiscate bears, big cats, snakes and other potentially dangerous animals if the owners don’t have the proper permits or cages for them.

Gov. Kasich says he’s confident state agriculture officials are making the right decision, since zoos and animal sanctuaries that are open to the public won’t be able to take the animals.

“We have a zoo up here in Columbus too. It’s going to be done appropriately and there will be appropriate security. No matter where you’re going to put it you’ve got concerns, but I think they’re in a good position to be able to do it. I support what they’re doing. I think it makes sense.”

The facility would be built behind the state agriculture department’s headquarters in Reynoldsburg east of Columbus and could hold from 30 to 60 animals and snakes. The mayor of Reynoldsburg is among those concerned about the safety of the facility, and Ohio Democratic Party chair Chris Redfern called it "an extraordinarily stupid idea."

Listener Comments:

First OH decides the only facilities able to take in these potentially displaced exotic animals are those accredited by GFAS, AZA, or others to ensure they are "the best". Now Kasich thinks the ODA is qualified as such? Sorry, no offense to the ODA, but is Kasich nuts? Why not allow the established, experienced and qualified facilities in and outside of OH do what they do best - take care of the animals? What does Kasich mean others "can't take in the animals?" According to what/whom? Starting from scratch - a government-run "zoo"?? Someone, please, educate the Governor. This is nuts.
