Mid-summer storms ripped up trees from the northwest corner of the state through the southwest, and Ohio is looking for a federal disaster declaration.
In The Region:
  • Murder indictment in Akron 'mercy killing' case
  • Hunt for Ohio's new school superintendent begins
  • Ohio delegation pushes Obama for disaster declaration
  • Homeowners get priority in Cuyahoga County
  • Alleged Chardon shooter appears in court today
  • Murder indictment in Akron 'mercy killing' case
A grand jury has indicted a 66-year-old man in the suspected mercy killing of his wife at an Akron hospital.

John Wise faces one count each of aggravated murder, murder and felonious assault in the Aug. 4 shooting of his wife in the intensive care unit of Akron General Medical Center.

Wise’s indictment was released today. He is next due in court on Friday, when he is expected to enter a plea.

A friend says Wise's wife, Barbara, had been disabled by a stroke when he shot her.

Hunt for Ohio's new school superintendent begins
he state school board is meeting in private to choose an interim successor for former state school Superintendent Stan Heffner and set a process for selecting his permanent replacement. Heffner resigned after a state watchdog investigation found potential misconduct in his office, including use of state personnel and equipment while he was preparing for a move to go work for a private testing company.

Ohio delegation pushes Obama for disaster declaration
Ohio’s two U.S. senators and most of its congressional delegation are pushing President Obama to declare the state a major disaster area following the storms that cut power from June 29th to July 2nd.

A major disaster declaration would free up federal funds to cover the continuing costs of clean-up and other issues in the parts of the state affected by the storms that cut from the northwest to the southeast, knocking out power to more than half a million customers, some for as much as a week.

    Homeowners wanted in Cuyahoga County
The Cuyahoga Land Bank is trying to encourage new homeowners by picking out properties that don’t need massive rehabs and setting them aside for the owner-occupant buyer advantage program.

To qualify, prospective homeowners must plan to live in the property for three years, must agree to minimum renovation specifications and must show they can get the financing they need.

Alleged Chardon shooter appears in court today
A judge today is hearing arguments and ruling today on key motions in the case of a student accused of killing three others in a shootout at Chardon High School.  Defense attorneys have asked for more time to consider whether to file an insanity plea in the case of T.J. Lane. Lane was 17 when he allegedly opened fire in the high school cafeteria on Feb. 27, but is being tried as an adult on charges of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder and felonious assault. He faces a sentence of life in prison with  no chance for parole.
