The head of the Catholic Health Association says her organization is staying out the presidential campaign fight over the health care overhaul but not completely. As WKSU’s Kevin Niedermier reports, Sister Carol Keehan told the Cleveland City Club today that the group will work to educate voters.

The Catholic Health Association does not endorse candidates. But Sister Keehan is concerned about Republican challenger Mitt Romney’s vow to eliminate President Obama’s health care program if elected. She says the Affordable Care Act isn’t perfect, but it’s a good start toward providing every American with health coverage. And, between now and November, she says educating the public on the program’s strengths is key.

“When we think there is misinformation that has the potential to negatively impact something that has great potential to be a great good for the country’s health care, we will try to correct that. And I’m sure many others will try to correct it as well. We are not going to try to get into the middle of campaign ads because that is a no win situation.”

Catholic bishops have objected to parts of the health-care overhaul that require employers who provide insurance to include birth control – which the church opposes. Keehan supports President Obama’s 1 year moratorium on the mandate while the two sides work out a compromise. The Catholic Health Association represents the nation’s 630 Catholic hospitals, which make-up nearly 13 percent of all the hospitals in the county.
