Ohio Tuesday, August 14, 2012 Officials find no Asian carp in Lake Erie despite DNA traces DNA likely appeared around lake through animal waste by WKSU's SIMON HUSTED | Reporter Simon Husted | | |
In The Region: Federal and state officials have found no Asian carp in bays around Lake Erie despite carp DNA gathered at those sites a year ago.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Ohio and Michigan Departments of Natural Resources had gathered 417 water samples, six of which turned up positive for Asian carp DNA last month. That led to a massive search two weeks ago to find out if the invasive fish itself is actually turning up at or near the lakes.
Rich Carter of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources reported Tuesday that no Asian carp have been found in the Sandusky and Maumee bays and rivers. |
“At least based on the sampling that was conducted in the past two weeks and from the existing sampling, if these fish are present they are present in very low numbers”
Carter says Asian carp DNA likely made it into the lakes and rivers through things such as bird waste or people rinsing purchased dead carp in their sinks.
