Economy and Business Monday, August 13, 2012 Southwest Airlines comes to Akron Carrier expands service from Cleveland Hopkins by WKSU's KABIR BHATIA |
 Reporter Kabir Bhatia | | |
In The Region: Southwest Airlines has landed at Akron-Canton Airport as part of its merger with AirTran Airlines. WKSU's Kabir Bhatia reports on what that could mean for travelers in northeast Ohio. |
Southwest has flown out of Cleveland Hopkins for 20 years, with Chicago as the top destination. Now, the Dallas-based carrier is adding two daily non-stop flights to the Windy City from the Akron-Canton Airport.
It’s a rarity for Southwest to be flying out of two cities so close together.Airline analyst Henry Harteveldt says the strategy gives Southwest time to watch profits and volume at each Northeast Ohio airport and then divide traffic accordingly. But forecasting those numbers will be tricky.
“Don’t expect Southwest to do exactly the same thing at Akron that AirTran has done. Southwest will be flying different types of airplanes, and has a different approach towards how it does business. I think it’s great that they’re continuing to run flights in and out of Akron, because they’ve dropped a lot of other cities on their route network.”
Harteveldt adds that Cleveland's more-profitable business fares may offset the higher landing fees at Hopkins. That could force the airline to transfer vacation travelers to Akron. On Southwest’s website, fares from Akron to Chicago are currently two dollars cheaper than from Cleveland.
As part of the expansion, the airline is also offering a flight to Denver from Akron-Canton. |
