Environment Monday, August 13, 2012 Ohio reduces water pollution in River Basin Trading Project It joins Kentucky and Indiana in first-ever plan that includes three states by WKSU's MARANDA SHREWSBERRY |
 Reporter Maranda Shrewsberry | | |
| Ohio has joined a tri-state plan to reduce runoff of nitrogen, phosphorus and other pollutants into the Ohio River Basin.
The state is joining Indiana and Kentucky in the first such three-state pact in the country.
The Electric Power Research Institute developed the framework for the plan which allows, for example, water treatment plants and utilities to pay farmers to lessen runoff into streams, rivers and lakes.
Chris Abbruzzese, spokesman for the Ohio EPA, says the plan will save money. |
“This program is set up to potentially be less of a cost to businesses or municipalities that need to reduce nutrients in their water and they can do it through the less-costly measures of buying credits as opposed to having to purchase costly machinery or technology.”
The research institute will work with the American Farmland Trust to help farmers control runoff. The institute will then calculate how much the efforts helped and generate the credits to sell to businesses.
