In The Region: Elyria High School graduate Tianna Madison helped set a world record Friday as part of the 4x100 relay team that won an Olympic gold medal in London.
Madison ran the first leg of the sprint. The American team’s total time for the race, 40.82 seconds, carved more than a half second off the old record, set by East Germany in 1985.
Madison used to be a long-jumper as well as a sprinter before a career-threatening knee injury in 2008. That prompted a change of coaches and a renewed focus on running.
At her hotel in London Friday, Tianna’s mother, Joann, said the entire relay was flawless.
|
"Oh my goodness, it's so surreal; we just could not believe it. We were way up in the stands just shouting. The entire stadium just erupted. Even the Britons were rejoicing with us. It was amazing."
After graduating from Elyria High School, Tianna Madison went to the University of Tennessee. This is the first time the Americans have won the gold in the relay sprint since 1996. |
