Health and Medicine Friday, August 10, 2012 Cleveland Clinic, CWRU, receive record grant $64.4 million will be distributed to alliance of medical researchers by WKSU's SIMON HUSTED | Reporter Simon Husted | | |
| A consortium of Northeast Ohio’s medical researchers is getting a record grant totaling $64.4 million over the next five years.
The money from the National Institutes of Health will help market laboratory break-throughs.
Ginny Petrie of Case Western Reserve University manages the grant and says the money is also invested into research initiatives such as clinical research centers. |
“And a Clinical Research Center is essentially a center where a patient comes for clinical trials," Petrie says. "You know it could be for a number of things. It could be for a skin disease, it could be for cystic fibrosis, it could be for obesity. And you know that comprises a big part of our funding.”
Petrie says the money also goes to educational programs to train the next generation of clinical researchers.
A similar alliance led by Case and the Cleveland Clinic got a similar five-year award in 2007. This new one marks the largest research grant ever awarded in Northeast Ohio. |
