Crime and Courts Thursday, August 2, 2012 DNA in 1997 murder not from convicted Akron cop Douglas Prade currently serving life in prison Story by STEVE BROWN |
| | |
In The Region: Attorneys representing an Akron police captain convicted of killing his ex-wife 14 years ago say new DNA testing shows he wasn’t the killer. The Ohio Innocence Project has been working on behalf of Douglas Prade, who’s long claimed he did not kill his wife, Dr. Margo Prade, in 1997. Innocence Project attorney Carrie Wood says Prade’s conviction hinged on a bite mark found on his ex-wife’s lab coat. |
“The test results that we announced today, we found that DNA tests revealed male DNA inside the bite mark area of Miss Prade's lab coat. And those results exclude Doug Prade from that DNA.” Wood says they’ve requested Prade be exonerated immediately, or at least be granted a new trial. She expects a court to hold a hearing within the next few weeks. Prade is serving life in prison and is eligible for parole in 2024. |
