  • President visits Mansfield and Akron
A poll by Quinnipiac University, the New York Times, and CBS news released this morning shows Barack Obama holding a 6 point lead in Ohio over Mitt Romney despite voter concern about the president’s handling of the economy.

The President landed at Mansfield’s Lahm Airport less than an hour ago.  Mr. Obama is Air visiting a National Guard base in Mansfield that has been targeted for cuts, and will address supporters this afternoon at Akron's John S. Knight Center.  It’s the President’s second visit to Akron in less than a month.

The Air National Guard base in Mansfield where President Obama is speaking has been on a list of air guard bases around the country facing cuts.  The fate of the cuts is uncertain, and in May a U.S. Senate panel approved a measure to block funding cuts to Air National Guard bases around the country.  The President ‘s visit to Akron this afternoon could cause rush hour traffic headaches.   Authorities, for security reasons, are not revealing the route the President’s motorcade will take.  Mayor Don Plusquellic says there may be delays, but “safety comes first.”

    Romney to visit next week
Mitt Romney is expected to launch a campaign bus tour with stops in Ohio beginning next week.  Speculation is that the Republican presidential contender will have his pick for VP with him as part of the pre-convention campaign swing.  The Republican convention is later this month in Florida.

Swine flu scare at Butler County fair
Ohio health and agriculture officials are investigating 10 sick people whose cases have similarities to a swine flu virus.  State and County health departments say lab tests indicate a strain of swine flu called H3N2 could be the cause.  The flu virus can be contracted by being around infected hogs.  Officials say all 10 had contact with hogs at the Butler County Fair, which ended last weekend.  The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is also investigating, but hasn't confirmed swine flu. Health officials say all 10 are recovering from their illness.

    Listeria on onions
A growing number of states are being added to a recall of foods made with tainted onions. Ohio is now on the list where Garden Fresh brands are recalling ready-to-eat salads, cole slaw, salsa, bean and dip products which sold under a number of brands.  The onions grown by Gill farms in California were found to be contaminated with Listeria, a pathogen that produces flu-like systems weeks after food is eaten, making it difficult to track.  The FDA website has a complete list of brands affected by the recall.

Steubenville may fight anti-religious group afterall
Officials in Steubenville have halted plans to remove religious symbols from the city logo.  The Freedom from Religion Foundation has threatened to sue the city over the symbols, but offers of free legal help have city officials rethinking their decision to remove them.

    Listener Comments:

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), a Mansfield native, applauded the president’s plan to come up with a new mission for the base.“While the proposed elimination of the C-27J is concerning,” he said in a statement, “the news of a follow-on mission is very encouraging.”

L O L! Here's how you define in-the-bag-dope! Prez: Uh, yeah, and while I'm at it, I'll double the size of this base and move the Pentagon here.
