Cleveland Clinic joins with health care system to turn concepts into products
Companies and universities form alliance network to commericalize medical ideas
by WKSU's KELLI FITZPATRICK

Reporter

In The Region:

The Cleveland Clinic is adding another healthcare system to its network to turn medical concepts into products quicker.

The Clinic is teaming up with ProMedica, a system that includes hospitals in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.

John Pigott is the medical director for ProMedica Innovations. He says the company recognized that its employees had innovative ideas, but needed help turning those concepts into products.

Pigott says the new alliance will give employees access to Cleveland Clinic’s services to develop their concepts. The alliance will help create companies around the new technologies, which could then create jobs in the Cleveland area.

“The very end goal of this is to commercialize products for patient care and patient use to improve their lives. But a secondary benefit, I think, will be an opportunity to have employment within the region that I think would be something we would all look forward to.”

Cleveland Clinic’s alliance network already includes the University of Notre Dame and MedStar Health. It has helped create 48 companies so far.
