Two Akron police officers are on leave after a man is shot and killed
An Akron man failed to drop his weapon after police told him to surrender
Story by OZIE IKUENOBE

Two Akron police officers are on administrative leave while their department tries to sort out what led them to shoot and kill a 35-year-old Akron man this (Thursday) morning.

Police spokesman Capt. Daniel Zampelli said an officer had tried to pull over Dawayne Grant Sr. for a minor traffic violation shortly after 7 a.m.

Zampelli says Grant led two officers on a low-speed car chase until he pulled over in south Akron and started running.  Grant allegedly pulled out a gun, the officers ordered him to drop it, he refused and they opened fire. Grant died at Akron City Hospital.

Zampelli says the officers’ leave is routine for any investigation into a police shooting.

“They’ll be interviewed, by not only our detectives, but by the city prosecutor, the county prosecutor, and then they will have an internal investigation. Those will determine if their use of force, their deadly use of force was proper and appropriate. So there are various, different factions that will be investigating this incident.”

Zampelli says no one knows yet why Grant did not surrender.

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly reported that Grant had no outstanding warrants.
