Crime and Courts Wednesday, July 25, 2012 Rt. 82 bomber pleads guilty Anthony Hayne may testify against four co-defendants by WKSU's KABIR BHATIA |
 Reporter Kabir Bhatia | | |
In The Region: One of the five men accused of trying to bomb a bridge over the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in April has admitted in court to his part in the plot. WKSU’s Kabir Bhatia reports that he’s also expected to cooperate with prosecutors in the case against the other four. |
Thirty-five-year-old Anthony Hayne of Cleveland has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction and attempted use of those weapons.
He and the four others were arrested April 30, and the U.S. attorney’s office says the self-proclaimed anarchists considered a series of evolving plots over several months before settling on the Route 82 bridge as their target.
An FBI informant had provided the group with a dud explosive. And some of their supporters claimed in protests outside the federal courthouse in Akron Wednesday that it was the informant that led the entire group astray.
But prosecutors say the anarchists acted out of their own anger against corporate America and the government.
Even if he testifies against the others, Anthony Hayne could face up to 19 years in prison. All but one of defendants is from Northeast Ohio. Their trial is scheduled for Sept. 17 in Akron. |
