Economy and Business Wednesday, July 25, 2012 Cleveland-Cuyahoga Port Authority wants people to vote for tax increase The tax increase is expected to raise $90 million in the next five years Story by OZIE IKUENOBE |

| The Cleveland-Cuyahoga Port Authority wants voters to OK a tax increase in November that it says could help it create jobs, overhaul the look of the lakefront and boost the local economy
The board approved the levy request today (Wednesday).
It would increase the tax for the port from about $3.50 a year to $20 for the average homeowner.
And it’s expected to raise $90 million in the next five years.
William Friedman, the president of Port Authority, says in addition to the economic benefits of the tax, it would help treat some of the environmental issues along the Cuyahoga River, such as the deteriorating bulkheads, polluted sediments and public access to the lake. |
“These are essential investments that we’ve put off for some time, and in order to keep companies that employ thousands of people in business, we’ve gotta make these investments. We have to have a local share and we have to use that local money in order to go out and leverage additional outside sources of money.”
Many of the voters who will decide the port tax are also being asked to approve a big hike in the property tax for Cleveland’s schools. |
