'Anarchist' pleads guilty, Mahoning corruption, new nuke plant, Ohio's smoking ban

The small nuclear reactor FirstEnergy is considering building would be a fraction of the size of its existing plants like Davis Besse and would be underground.

  • One "anarchist" pleads guilty
One of the five men accused of trying to bomb a bridge that runs over the Cuyahoga Valley National Park has pleaded guilty.

Anthony Hayne entered his plea in U.S. District Court in Akron today and faces 15 to 19 years in prison.

He is expected to testify against the other four men during a trial set to begin Sept. 17.  The FBI says the men were anarchists who plotted to blow up the Route 82 bridge in April. An FBI informant had provided them with a dud explosive.

Meanwhile, outside the courtroom this morning, supporters of the five protested, holding up signs that read "Stop FBI Entrapment" and "Justice Don't Be Blind." The mother of one defendant says the suspects were manipulated by the informant.

High court tells judge to unseal Mahoning corruption files
The Ohio Supreme Court has ordered a judge to unseal the records of Mahoning County’s  public corruption case.

The 2010 case originally accused county officials of accepting bribes from members of the Cafaro family to keep renting property from the family's company for county offices. Prosecutors have dismissed the case, but could refile, and a visiting judge sealed the case.

But the unanimous Supreme Court decision says the judge never gave the public notice that he was considering the seal so they could argue against it. It also said the judge erred in denying requests by the Youngstown Vindicator to get copies of the particular claims made by the grand jury when it laid out the case against the defendants.

First Energy considers a new nuclear plant
FirstEnergy has signed a deal with Babcock and Wilcox to see what  it would take to build a small nuclear reactor. The reactor would be built underground and would generate just a small fraction of the energy coming from FirstEnergy’s four big reactors – including Davis Besse and Perry.

    Ohio's smoking ban stands
The state Supreme Court won't reconsider its ruling declaring that Ohio's smoking ban is constitutional. The high court today denied a request by a Columbus tavern owner to revisit its May decision. Voters passed the prohibition against smoking in all public buildings – including restaurants and bars -- in 2006.

    Ohio's Olympic hopefuls
The summer games begin in earnest in London tomorrow, with a dozen Northeast Ohioans participating in events ranging from basketball to boxing to the hammer throw.
