Crime and Courts Friday, July 20, 2012 Ohio safety officials advise people to mentally prepare for shootings Things such as having a escape route or making a note of a shooter's appearance are good for emergencies by WKSU's STATEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT JO INGLES |
 Reporter Jo Ingles | | |
| The shooting at a movie theatre in Aurora Colorado is being called the largest mass shooting in US history. Ohio Homeland Security spokesman and Highway Patrol Lieutenant Anne Ralston says Ohioans need to mentally prepare themselves for how to deal with a public shooter. She says instances like this do happen occasionally. |
“We have experienced here in Ohio during the Chardon school shooting. We know it does happen. Unfortunately, one instance is one too many. That’s why it’s important that we prepare ourselves. Have a plan in mind in the event that something bad would happen. And if you mentally prepare and one of these horrible incidences does happen, you can hopefully get out of that safely.”
Ralston warns to always have an escape route in mind, evacuate as quickly as possible, and hide if you can. She says take action to stop the shooter only if your life is in imminent danger. Ralston says it's important to remain as calm as possible and cooperate with police when they arrive on the scene. And she says try to make mental notes about the shooter. And she advises to get a good description of the shooter's clothing and weapons if possible. |
