Friday, July 13, 2012 Internet cafes more widespread in Ohio than estimated Ohio AG says there are now more than 600 internet sweepstakes cafes suspected of operating illegal gambling by WKSU's STATEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT BILL COHEN |
 Reporter Bill Cohen | | |
| The number of storefronts that Ohio law enforcers suspect are conducting illegal gambling is twice as big as many had thought. In March, the office of Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine estimated the state had about 280 businesses that called themselves “Sweepstakes” or “internet cafes.” But now that a new state law has required the businesses to register, it’s clear there are at least 667. Dan Tierney speaks for the A.G. and he says these operations questionable. |
The attorney general hopes that this proliferation of the internet cafes will convince Ohio legislators to crack down on them and perhaps put them out of business. So far, the only limit that lawmakers have approved is a moratorium on NEW internet cafes or sweepstakes. |
