Environment Wednesday, July 11, 2012 Environmentalists say Ohio ban protects Lake Erie against 'drill baby drill' They praise Kasich as a bullwark against Tea Party drillers by WKSU's STATEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT BILL COHEN |
 Reporter Bill Cohen | | |
In The Region: Ohio Gov. John Kasich today signed an executive order, banning oil and gas drilling in Lake Erie. Statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen reports that, in a way, the order doesn’t change anything, but it could still be important in the future. |
Gov. Kasich says he signed the ban because Ohio citizens count on “depend upon Lake Erie as an irreplaceable source of drinking water and for its cultural, environmental, recreational and aesthetic value.” He calls Ohio the “trustee and steward of the waters of Lake Erie.”
Congress banned drilling in all the Great Lakes years ago. But environmentalists say Kasich’s executive order is not superfluous.
Jack Shaner of the Ohio Environmental Council says the mood of Congress means the federal ban is not a given.
“There’s no guarantee that the federal law will be renewed especially with the Tea Party ‘drill here, drill often, drill-baby-drill’crowd in Washington, D.C.”
He also says the oil and gas industry is voracious and pushing to drill everywhere in Ohio.
Representatives of the industry trade association, the Ohio Oil and Gas Association, did not respond to calls for comment. |
