Politics

Wednesday, July 11, 2012 Cleveland TV market ranks second in political advertising Columbus' TV market ranks eighth in political TV market. by WKSU's SIMON HUSTED This story is part of a special series.

In The Region: Politics has been good to Cleveland TV.
Media Daily News reports that Cleveland, which has the 18th largest television market in the nation, trailed only Los Angeles in political ads for the first half of this year.
Much of that spending has been directed at the Ohio senate race between incumbent Sherrod Brown and challenger Josh Mandel. It is one of the most expensive races in the country and independent groups have spent more than $10 million against Brown.
He was asked about the new numbers during a conference call with reporters Wednesday. |
“Well it is good if you own a TV station," Brown says. "It is not-so-good if you’re sitting at home and watching attack ads paid for by—we figure—oil companies and drug companies and insurance companies and companies that benefit from outsourcing our jobs to China.”
As of mid June, independent groups weighing in on Brown’s side had spent about $1.1 million.
The Media Daily report says the four TV stations in Cleveland sold a total of nearly $18 million in political ads through June. Meanwhile Columbus, with the nation’s 34th largest TV market, jumped up to eight-place in political ads.
