In The Region: A fire continues to burn near the Ohio State Fairgrounds after 11 train cars derailed and at least one exploded early this morning. Fire officials are reporting at least two injuries, and about 100 people living within a quarter mile of the derailment have been evacuated.
Assistant Fire Chief Dave Whiting says train cars are still burning, but the blaze has been contained. |
“We’re going to let the product burn down, that’s the safest. We’re going to do a few things to make some changes, but right now we’re just letting it burn and watching it.”
Whiting says at least one car contained about 20,000 gallons of ethanol when it caught fire. He says it will likely take several hours for the fire to burn out. The cause of the derailment is still unclear.
