Crime and Courts Tuesday, July 10, 2012 Gov. Kasich grants clemency to another death row inmate A month ago, Kasich also spared the life of Abdul Awkal by WKSU's STATEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT JO INGLES |
 Reporter Jo Ingles | | |
| A month after he set aside the death sentence of a Cincinnati man, Ohio Governor John Kasich has spared the life of a death row inmate from Mahoning County. Ohio Public Radio's Jo Ingles has details. |
“Governor Kasich has commuted the death sentence of John Jeffrey Eley. Kasich says Eley, who has limited mental capacity, acted under the direction of another man who was later acquitted. And without those factors, Kasich says it’s doubtful Eley would have committed the murder of Ihsan Aydah in Mahoning County back in 1987. Kasich says the prosecutor who tried the case back then now regrets the way the case was handled and has called for clemency. That’s why Kasich says he’s commuted Eley’s sentence to life in prison without parole.” |
