Arts and Entertainment Friday, July 6, 2012 Dayton Air Show featuring WWII re-enactment "Tora! Tora! Tora!" is centerpiece of air show by WKSU's STATEHOUSE BUREAU CHIEF KAREN KASLER |
 Reporter Karen Kasler | | |
In The Region: There are two big air shows in Ohio every summer – the first is the Dayton Air Show this weekend. Ohio Public Radio’s Karen Kasler found it may be hot on the ground, but it’s cool in the open sky. |
One of the feature performances at the Dayton Air Show is "Tora! Tora! Tora!" – a re-enactment of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor complete with fiery explosions, blaring air raid sirens and zooming aircraft. Mike Allen of Houston – originally from South Africa – flies a North American T-6, which is made to look like a Japanese Zero for the show.
“Well, the show is completely different in that we have airplanes 20 feet from the ground flying in opposite directions with bombs underneath.”
Dayton International Airport does operate during the Air Show, but there are restrictions on the airspace for certain acts. Air Show organizers hope for 70,000 visitors, but they admit the extreme heat that’s in the forecast could cut into attendance figures. |
