Ohio Thursday, July 5, 2012 Ohio pledges to spend money to make money on tourism Governor signs new bill with a dedicated revenue stream to promote travel and tourism by WKSU's STATEHOUSE BUREAU CHIEF KAREN KASLER |
 Reporter Karen Kasler | | |
| Gov. John Kasich hit one of Ohio’s best known tourist spots today – the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland – to sign a bill making changes in the state Department of Tourism. The governor was flanked by the sponsor of the bill, Rep. Mike Dovilla of the Cleveland suburb of Berea, who explains the creation of a program called TourismOhio. |
“This is a five year pilot program … to promote our state as a travel destination and to encourage growth both in tourism-related sectors and in related industry.. … Tourism is the fourth largest industry in the state of Ohio. It employs $439,000 people in this state and it accounts for “$36 billion in annual revenue.”
The bill creates a dedicated funding source for tourism through sales taxes collected as a result of growth in tourism. The changes to the tourism agency were part of a bill that makes many changes to the state Department of Development. The makeover of that entity started last year with the creation of the public-private partnership called JobsOhio.
