Economy and Business Thursday, July 5, 2012 Ohio inches up list of underwater mortgages Moves from sixth to fourth among states with most negative equity homes by WKSU's KABIR BHATIA |
 Reporter Kabir Bhatia | | |
In The Region: Ohio has jumped from sixth to fourth… among states with the most underwater mortgages. That’s according to a new study that still shows a decrease in foreclosure filings. WKSU’s Kabir Bhatia reports. |
The study from Policy Matters Ohio shows that home foreclosures dropped for the second straight year in 2011. The biggest decreases came in Lorain and Mahoning Counties. But the overall number is still about four times 1995 levels in almost every Ohio county, with Cuyahoga topping the list.
The report from RealtyTrac also looked at home values, and found that Ohio trails California and Florida in underwater mortgages, and that the Buckeye state is about even with Georgia and Arizona.
That means nearly one-third of Ohioans owe more than their homes are worth after the housing slump and recession.
The Plain Dealer reports that reductions on the principals of home mortgages are slowly gaining popularity. The move comes after a 25 billion dollar settlement earlier this year among state attorney generals and the country’s five largest mortgage services. |
