Atty. General Dewine warns immigrants of advice scams
'Con artists' claim they can help immigrants take advantage of President Obama's new order
by WKSU's STATEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT BILL COHEN

Reporter
Bill Cohen

Ohio’s Attorney General is warning young immigrants not to pay for advice on how to take advantage of the President’s new order to allow some people who came to the U.S. as children to stay here. Mike DeWine says scam artists may try to trick immigrants into paying for un-necessary legal advice.

He says even after the federal government sets up a process for undocumented immigrants to apply for permission to stay in the U.S., the immigrants should seek advice only from a lawyer.

“The president just issued this order a couple weeks ago, but he has given the bureaucrats 60 days to come up with exactly how this will be implemented. So, for someone to come forward now and say, I know how to help you on this, is crazy.”

“DeWine: ‘We have a bunch of con artists who are always trying to prey on people, get money from them, to give them advice and give them help when the information is readily available on the internet, or is available through some other official source. And in this particular case, the president just issued this order a couple weeks ago, but he has given the bureaucrats 60 days to come up with exactly how this will be implemented. So, for someone to come forward now and say, I know how to help you on this, is crazy.’

Cohen: ‘You’ve got some other advice for people, such as don’t sign a form that’s basically blank.’

DeWine: ‘And don’t give up any of your original documents.’

Cohen: ‘Do you already have examples in Ohio where these con artists are operating on this premise, or is this kind of just a pre-emptive strike on your part?’

Dewine: ‘It is a pre-emptive strike, although the Ohio Latino Affairs Commission is concerned about this, and they must be getting some information about this, because they’re the ones we’re working with.”
