Ex-Ohio officer says he was harassed, fired for being Muslim
Former Norton officer files civil rights complaint in federal court
by WKSU's M.L. SCHULTZE

In The Region:

A former suburban Akron police officer is suing his department, saying he was harassed and then fired after his boss and fellow officers discovered he is Muslim.

Nicholas Matheny filed his civil rights complaint against the city of Norton in U.S. District Court today.

It claims he was fired in late 2010 after he had sent out wedding invitations that acknowledged he is Muslim, and then refused to quit under pressure.

His lawyer, Subodh Chandra   says disciplinary notes in Matheny’s personnel record were either created after the fact or were disproportional to what happened with other officers in similar situations.

“How could he go from being an exemplary officer who the chief was nominating for an award for his drunk driving arrest to suddenly being the world’s biggest screw up? There’s only one way that could happen, and that’s if they were terminating him because he had sincerely converted to the Muslim faith.”

The disciplinary record includes claims that he missed pretrial hearings, lied about his gun being cleaned and complained about being put on bike patrol.

The city of Norton’s lawyer says the case is being turned over to the city’s insurance company, and he has not yet seen the federal complaint  and the city will have no comment.
