Health and Medicine Monday, July 2, 2012 Ohio Medicaid gets $40 million in settlement with drug maker GlaxoSmithKline settlent is largest in U.S. history by WKSU's STATEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT BILL COHEN |

 | | GlaxoSmithKline will pay up in the largest health-care fraud settlement in the nation's history. | Ohio is getting a $40 million slice of a $3 billion national settlement with drug maker GlaxoSmithKline.
Ohio was one of five states and several federal agencies who investigated claims that the global pharmaceutical company marketed drugs for unapproved uses and lied about their safety and how they worked. The drugs included the anti-asthma drug Advair and anti-depressant Paxil.
Attorney General Mike DeWine says it’s the largest health-care fraud settlement in U.S. history, and that GlaxoSmithKline also plans to plead guilty to federal criminal charges in the case. |
“Ohio Attorney Mike Dewine says a big prescription drug maker, GlaxoSmithKline, has agreed to pay $3 billion so the state’s and the federal government will drop accusations that the company illegally marketed and priced medicines like Paxil, Advair and Wellbutrin. If the proposed settlement is finalized, Ohio’s Medicaid system would be reimbursed $40 million. Here’s the way DeWine sums up the case: ‘GlaxoSmithKline illegally marketed several prescription drugs for ailments the medications were not intended to treat. The medicines were then over-prescribed, and paid for with Ohio taxpayer dollars.’” |
