Ohio Monday, June 25, 2012 Ohio Attorney General charges 18 with real estate fraud Scammers collected "fees," promised to help sell desert land by WKSU's STATEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT JO INGLES |
 Reporter Jo Ingles | | |
| Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine has charged 18 suspects in a multi-state telemarketing ring. DeWine says thousands of victims from at least 41 states, most of them elderly, have lost about 4 million dollars to scammers who said they would help sell their property. |
“Most of the uninhabited land parcels had an assessed value between 500 and 3000 dollars. Nevertheless, these scammers called and convinced many owners that they had buyers….buyers who were going to pay 10 to 30 times the assessed value and they always had a story. Buyers were going to build power plants, casinos, wildlife center, even an Olympic training facility…..all the owners had to do was pay fees and closing costs to the scammers to finalize the transactions.”
Dewine says there were never any buyers, and the phony deals were used to collect fees and closing costs. |
