Crime and Courts Friday, June 22, 2012 Auto-thefts down across state Cleveland ranks worst in state and 57th worst in the country. by WKSU's STATEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT BILL COHEN |

Ohio cities are not national leaders in one category… auto theft rates.
An insurance industry group has used preliminary FBI statistics to rate more than 300 cities across the country on their car theft problem. While seven California cities are among the ten worst, not one Ohio city makes the top 50. Several Ohio cities do show up on the overall list though.
Mitch Wilson is with the Ohio Insurance Institute and he spoke to Statehouse reporter Bill Cohen about Ohio’s placement in the list. |
“Cleveland is the 57th worst in the country and they are the worst city within the state,” Wilson says. “Followed next would be Toledo which was ranked in 79th, Columbus at 104, Dayton at 133 and Springfield at 156.”
Wilson says each city’s ranking fluctuates every year. Last year Cleveland was ranked 82nd worst in the country. The entire state, however, is heading toward a better trend.
Wilson says the number of vehicle thefts in Ohio has dropped for seven straight years, and when the final numbers for 2011 are confirmed, it’s likely that that will constitute an eighth straight year of drops. |
