In The Region: It was 200 years ago that the War of 1812 broke out. Ohio was in the thick of the conflict, and today the state launched a year-long commemoration of the event. Statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen was on hand for the ceremony in the capitol building. |

The War of 1812 was the second time in three decades that the young U.S.A. battled Britain for independence.
Ohio holds strong significance in the 19th century war because two important battles took place here—one in Toledo and one on Lake Erie.
“Some have called this war the second war of Independence,” says D.K. Taylor of the Ohio Army National Guard. “By declaring and fighting a war against Great Britain, we not only preserved our national honor, but showed the world that the United States of America was to be reckoned with on an international level.”
This commemoration comes less than a decade after Ohio celebrated its own bicentennial in 2003.
