In The Region: The Teamsters have settled a four-month strike this morning with the division of Red Cross that handles blood drives for Northern Ohio. |
Teamsters Local 507 walked out on Valentine’s Day, protesting issues focused on health-care costs and working conditions.
In announcing the settlement, Red Cross spokeswoman Christy Sabaka says the new four-year deal ratified by the Teamsters includes guarantees on health insurance and pay hikes she could not detail.
It also sets up a labor-management committee to address workplace issues. The Teamsters had complained that they were denied breaks and lunches because they weren’t kept informed of the number of donors who were turning out.
Sabaka says the strike cut sharply the number of collections:
“Now that we have our workers coming back we will be able to return to our full capacity. We had been running approximately five blood drives a day (during the strike) and hopefully soon we’ll be able to get back to our 25 blood drives every day. It will take some time, but we hope to do that as soon as possible.”
The union represents nearly 250 people working in the region.
