Economy and Business Wednesday, June 13, 2012 Ohio's Brown pushes farm bill, including big changes in farmer protection First Ohian to sit on Ag Committee in decades says the bill is fairer to farmers and taxpayers Story by SIMON HUSTED |
| | |
| Ohio’s Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown supports a new bill that would eliminate the federal government’s direct payment to farmers and make other cuts that would save taxpayers $23 billion.
Brown is the first Ohioan to sit on the Senate Agriculture Committee in more than 40 years. And he wrote several provisions of the bill.
He told reporters during a conference call today that the bill will still protect farmers in emergencies. |
“We save taxpayer money, we provide a more responsible risk management approach. Under the bill, farmers receive support only when they suffer a substantial loss to events beyond their control and only for crops they’ve actually planted, a different policy from what we’ve seen for decades.”
The bill would also cut $ 4 billion from the federal government’s food stamp program, a fraction of the $33 billion cut a House bill is proposing. |
