Lakewood-based FutureChurch, a liberal Catholic group, planned the vigil, one of more than 50 held throughout the country.

It comes in response to the Vatican’s announcement last month that it will intervene to reform the organization that represents most U.S. nuns, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious.

The Vatican says the group made statements about the ordination of women and human sexuality that went against the church doctrine.

Sister Beverly Ann Lograsso of Cleveland says, for her, the issue is about a lack of understanding between Rome and the issues facing American Nuns.

“Their experience with marginalized people, poor people, is very limited. What becomes burning issues for people who work that population all the time, are not burning issues for them. They just don’t experience it the same way. If women were able to share their ministerial experience and reflect together with the men in the church, we would probably have a different outcome. But that’s not the way the structure is right now.”

The Leadership Conference of Women Religious is meeting now in Washington D.C. to plan a response to the Vatican. The Diocese of Cleveland gave no comment on the vigil, which the Plain Dealer is reporting was the largest in the country.
