Friday, May 25, 2012 Cleveland school plan gets tentative OK, including charter restrictions But school overhaul changes still need more votes in Columbus
|

In The Region: Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, Gov. John Kasich and Ohio’s top lawmakers have reached deal that is expected to lead to the overhaul of Cleveland city schools.
Legislators will have to adjust state law to accommodate some of the changes Jackson wants to make in Ohio’s second largest school system. The GOP-dominated House and Senate had praised many of the changes. But they had balked over Jackson’s call for a special commission to review charter-school performance. High-performing charters could be eligible for local school funding, but poor performers would not be able to operate in the city.
Some opponents said the commission would have too much control.
The compromise announced this afternoon requires charter schools to choose from a list of sponsors cleared by a coordinating panel. They also would have to meet standards based on national guidelines.
According to the Associated Press, lawmakers backing the plan say they still need votes to get it passed in Columbus. The House and Senate are expected back for a special session June 12.
