Ohio Monday, April 30, 2012 Ohians challenged to buy meals on less than $5 a day Activists sponsor the food-stamp challenge by WKSU's STATEHOUSE BUREAU CHIEF KAREN KASLER |
 Reporter Karen Kasler | | |
| Anti-poverty activists are asking Ohioans to spend this workweek with 23 dollars set aside for food for all five days. Phil Cole with the Ohio Association of Community Action Agencies explains those who take the food-stamp challenge have about $1.54 to spend per meal. |
It’s difficult. It’s difficult, that’s what we’re finding out. We want to bring attention to the importance of this program and the difficulty of it. That it’s not easy to live on a food stamp budget.
Cole says this morning, his dog ate the sandwich he’d made for his lunch – which reminded him that people on food stamps usually can’t afford toreplace food that’s lost or ruined. Some 1.75 million Ohioans received food stamps last year – the average recipient got 140 dollars a month, or less than 5 dollars per day. Cuts to the federal program are being debated, so Cole hopes people will take the challenge to better understand what’s it’s like to live on the benefits provided now.
