JobsOhio rules could make public record private

In The Region:
Ohio’s Attorney General says a bill creating rules for Ohio's new economic development agency could make public records… private.  WKSU’s Kabir Bhatia reports that Mike DeWine has a problem with that.

Republican Attorney General Mike DeWine questions the provision that says records created or received by the non-profit JobsOhio are not public.  The publicly funded JobsOhio board has been dogged by questions about the agency’s transparency, but DeWine is mostly concerned with the flow of information from public agencies such as the Ohio Department of Transportation.

“You can have ODOT that had information that’s public.  They send it to JobsOhio; it instantly becomes secret.  Not only at JobsOhio, it becomes secret at ODOT.  That couldn’t have been anyone’s intent, but that’s the way it reads.  So we think it’s a real problem.”

JobsOhio is funded by a 25-year, 1.4 billion dollar deal involving state liquor profits.DeWine says he is in talks with Gov. John Kasich and state lawmakers to reword the bill that cleared the Ohio House on Wednesday and is headed to the Senate.  DeWine is confident an agreement will be hammered out in the next few days.
