Ohio Thursday, April 26, 2012 Ohio auditor says ODOT can save by selling equipment Says shifting equipment could cover gaps by WKSU's STATEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT BILL COHEN |
 Reporter Bill Cohen | | |
 | | State Auditor David Yost pushes ODOT to close rest stops and sell equipment. |
In The Region: The state auditor says the Ohio Department of Transportation could save $6 million a year. One suggestion from Auditor Dave Yost is to have the agency sell off some of its heavy equipment including road graders and asphalt pavers because many of the machines are rarely used. |
“Simply by scheduling and sharing between districts, we could use 42 percent less of this equipment and still maintain the same level of service.”
Another suggestion from the auditor is that the transportation department consider closing two highway rest-stops along I-70 in eastern Ohio. Yost says they cost about a quarter million dollars to maintain every year and closing them would not inconvenience drivers much, because there are plenty of restroom facilities at truck stops close by.
